Artist Feature - Novita

Our next digi-artist in the house is Novita. Novita does not own a blog but you can view her gallery here. ) She is a SAHM to her twins girls and 4 furkids! Married for 10 years, Novita has  been living here in Kuala Lumpur for the last 4 years.  I asked how Novita discovered scrapbooking and she tells me that at the end of 2004, she stumbled upon a scrapbooking site when looking for some clipart to decorate my photos. Hence - it would be safe to say that her digi scrapbooking started with an accidental stumble.

Novita rates flowers,  buttons and ribbons as her favourite elements in her scrapbooking.  She loves to scrap about her children and her other children... hee hee - her furkids I mean.  Novita is a proud owner of a Canon 30D and from what I can tell by her photos - she uses it to her full advantage - her photos are beautifully captured.

Thank you Novita - for sharing all your beautiful work with us.

Circle Journal - Shyra

We have recived this beautiful submission from Shyra for our "Why I scrap?" Circle Journal.  This is another beautiful submission where Shyra cleverly omitted her photo - I guess no photos necessary to explain why she scraps.  Coupled with beautiful diecuts,  lace cardstock and prima flowers - Shyra has nailed the layout to a "T".  As I have said before - Shyra - this is a beautiful layout considering that you have just started scrapbooking a year ago. Well done. Thanks so much for sharing.

If you are interested in participating in our circle journal,  please note that you will need to mail the original layout to us and it will not be returned as this will go into the MSS Circle Journal to be admired by future generations of scrappers. For details,  please email chowchow138@gmail.com.

Doodled Challenge Submissions

Here are our submissions to the Doodled Challenge so far... Enjoy:

ATC Tutorial - Foam, Gesso and Vintage Images

Due to time constraints, I am still unable to run an ATC class but I have decided to release this tutorial so that you all can try this ATC. I normally like to use thin chipboard for making ATCs but that is not neccessary. You can always use a cardstock or any patterned paper.

Here are the steps to making this ATC:

Firstly,  gather your materials.  I have a foam heart,  an image and a thin chipboard measuring 3 1/3 by 2/12 inch.  That is a standard size for ATCs.

Place the foam heart where you desire.

Add gesso to the whole chipboard ATC including the foam heart.

The reason why we do that would be to mask the original colour of the heart.

Paint on an acrylic colour that you like.

I have used a script stamp to create a background and stuck the image on by using some modge podge.

Hope you will like this simple ATC tutorial and will try it soon.  Please do not hesitate to send us via email any photos of the tutorials that you have tried in our blog.  We would definitely be most happy to post your beautiful creations in our blog.

Artist Feature - Joyce Chan

We searched far and away for this artist feature. Joyce is a Malaysian currently residing in Perth, Australia. Mom to a very pretty 5 year old, Joyce is a self-taught scrapbooker. As a relative new scrapbooker,  Joyce is ever willing to try new things.  I would have to say that Joyce's works of art belies how long she has been doing scrapbooking.

I have chosen some of her projects to share with you.  I couldn't believe her first try with the altered box - the altered box looks so beautiful and her album is gorgeous too.  Thanks very much Joyce for sharing all your beautiful work with us.  For more information on Joyce - do head over to her blog.

Layout inspiration from Challenges

Step 1:  I crumpled and distressed with paper using distress inks and embossing techniques.  I have also used my script stamps to emboss a little background to make it more interesting.
Secondly,  I have used my clear stamps from Technique Tuesday with leaves to go around the circle of the second patterned paper.  This is one advantage of the acrylic stamps that we are able to manipulate them.  After which I added some gold embossing powder.

The rest of the layout is self-explanatory - I just added rubons and a little bit of blings.

There are lots of inspiration for scrapping out there.  One of my favourite is to check up on challenges.  On my  usual morning run through forums,  I found this very interesting series of challenges on the Scrapping Kids Forum.

As I browsed,  the challenge that caught my eye was a challenge by Cookie - one of their DTs.  The challenge was to scrap with only using stamps and rub-ons only. Hence,  I have decided to join in the fun.  The above is the layout that I made and for those who are interested in the challenges - pls head off to the Scrapping Kids Forum.

Tips and Tech - Handsewn Projects

I have always found that sewing on my scrapbooking projects most therapeutic.  Hence, whenever I can find the extra time,  I just incorporate some labourious sewing into the layouts. One easy way to do that would be to use stamps. Here, I have stamped the image of a flourish onto the layout.  Used the piercer to pierce holes in the paper. The reason why we do this is to prevent the page from ripping or tearing as we are pulling the thread through. After that you are free to sew with your needle and thread.  In this layout - I have used a running stitch and a chain stitch.  Hope you like this simple way to jazz up your layout.

She would like to share her method of storing her album with us and from the looks of the albums - my - she puts me to shame with all her work. Layouts with rub-ons

How many of you have this problem? Bought loads of rub-ons and haven't used them and the humidity in our country has ruined them? Iris has come up with a novel way to use these remaining rub-ons and the layout that she has designed has turned out so beautifully.

Iris' Layout Materials - All from Prima.

Feeling inspired by Iris,  I came up with my own version of a rub-on layout.  Boy - it was fun and I love all the colours merging together even though I have used rub-ons from different manufacturers.

Materials used:
Fancy Pants Rub-ons,  Heather Bailey Rub-ons,  Hambly Rub-ons,  Me and my Big Ideas Rub-ons,  Zen Rub-ons from GCD,  K n Co Felt Flowers and Butterfly Stickers and GIN-X Alphas rub-ons.

We would like to thank Iris for sharing her stunning layout with us and for allowing it to be published in our blog.

Sharing in our community

One of the main purpose of setting up this blog would be to create an awareness and promote scrapbooking in Malaysia.  However,  this blog is a one woman operation and my resources are limited.  Hence - I would like to invite my fellow scrapbookers to help me in this little quest of mine.

What can you share here - you may ask.  Well - we could do a feature on your work like so many you have seen here as an Artist Feature.  I find that a lot of scrapbookers take pride in their work and by sharing your works here - you benefit the rest who enjoying looking at your layouts and drawing inspirations from them.

Secondly,  if you know of any information,  promotions and events that you wish to highlight to our scrapbooking community,  please do let us know at chowchow138@gmail.com. We would definitely help spread the word when its deemed fit.

If you wish to share a tutorial, please feel free to do so.  I have done one on lanterns as Mooncake Festival.  You may share any one tutorial that you have done yourself here.  It can be an album,  an altered item,  etc. Similarly,  if you have some cool tips and techniques,  please do email me.  Yatie Tajudin has shared her method of perfect perals with perfect mediumI would love to publish it.

I am also looking into product reviews.  If you have used a certain product and would love to share your views on the product,  please do email us at chowchow138@gmail.com.  We would love to hear from you.

T n T - Doodling

My first draft.
Decided to add colour as it was too monotonous.
Added the photo - voila - another simple layout.

Tried my hand at doodling as I was given some Zig Chalk and Metallic pens to try out.  Thought it would be fun to do a layout entirely of doodles.  I am not a fan of doodling but I love a challenge and this is what I have come up with.

Firstly, I have decided to use a sketch by Jaz in the ScrappingGlitz forum.  Then I doodled some paisleys to make a flower and some corresponding vines.  Did a free-hand frame to complete it and added the photo on to complete the layout.  I agree I am not good in doodling but its really worth a try on your layouts - just to come up with something different.

Circle Journal - Nadia Jalil

Our third submission for the circle journal comes from none other than Scrappingchix's owner, Nadia Jalil. She has created a layout that is both sweet and elegant for us. Love how she stamped the top corner of the layout.  Nad also used UTEE to emboss the sides of her layout.

If I could put a signature on Nad's layout,  I would say that she loves very shabby chic designs and her love of PRima flowers - unparallel.  Thank you for your submission Nad.

For those who are curious to know, we are trying to compile a collection of layouts titled:   "Why I scrap?" into our very first circle journal.  We have received a couple of submissions already which we will feature as we go along.  Please not that the layouts WILL NOT be returned and will be kept in the album which will be "travelling" to different stores. In order to view the album,  please head over to Scrappingville next Wednesday.
